Itchy Skin . . . Little Scars

Zippy has dry skin.  That’s no surprise.  African-American skin requires a lot of moisturizer to keep it smooth and conditioned.

Zippy also has allergies.  He doesn’t suffer from eczema, thank goodness.  But still he is an allergy kid and he gets hives and bumpies on his skin.

Zippy has an anxiety disorder.

Zippy also has an ultra-sensitive sensory system.  Ever lie in your bed and suddenly get a little itch on your arm?  And then as you finish scratching that one, maybe you get a little itch on your head or on your thigh?  And maybe get another itch or two as you’re settling in?  (If you think you have never experienced this, just think about it next time you go to bed, and notice if it doesn’t maybe happen to you.)  Well, when Zippy – Mr. SuperSensi – experiences those little bedtime itches, he feels as though his bed is filled with creepy crawly bugs.

For these reasons, Zippy scratches his skin a lot.  A lot.  A whole lot.

He scratches.

Zippy doesn’t completely process pain like the rest of us — another sensory issue.  Because he doesn’t process pain normally, he scratches each night until he bleeds.  Yes, he causes himself to bleed every single night.

His body is covered in little scars where he has scratched and scratched and caused himself to bleed.

More lotion.  More oil.  More Solarcaine spray (to deaden it).  Benadryl.  More lotion.  More potion.

Nothing seems to improve it.

It’s part of his bedtime, falling asleep ritual.  I think we’re stuck with it.

I cant imagine itching every single night. I’m praying God eases his itching and he gets peaceful nights……

    • Thank you, Brenda! We so appreciate your prayers. This post came about last week when I was trying to make a list of things that happen daily around here that maybe don’t happen in everyone else’s homes everyday. . . . Thanks for commenting! 🙂

Lord bless sweet Zippy and bless this family – a light that shines more than they know

  3. Poor Zippy. That’s terrible. Joseph has a lot of scarring on his face from where he has picked it. Fortunately, it just looks like freckles, but if you look closely you can tell it’s prom the picking. He does this with his belly button as well. Poor little boys and their anxiety/sensory issues. Praying Zippy’s condition improves.

  4. The poor guy! My husband has dry skin and he scratches all day, every day. He also has scars from where he scratched until he bled. It can be so frustrating! Good luck and I hope you can come up with something that will help him soon!
